Scientists Map Geological Structures with Thunderquakes

When Lightning Strikes Gold: Harnessing Thunderquakes for Geological Insights The relationship between Earth's surface and atmosphere has long been of interest to geophysicists.

Recent research has shed new light on this dynamic interaction by leveraging the tiny vibrations generated by lightning strikes – known as thunderquakes.

Scientists at Pennsylvania State University have made significant strides in mapping geological structures beneath our feet by burying high quality fiber optic cables under their campus and using them in conjunction with acoustic sensors to capture information on over 450 thunderquakes over two years.
